Arcadia Care Bloomington: Ant Infestation in Rooms - IL
The August 20 complaint inspection found ant infestations in at least two residents' rooms at the 92-bed facility. The windowsills in both rooms were covered in dust and dead insects. In one room, dead spiders were also present.
The first resident, a woman with chronic neuropathy, anxiety, and major depression, was lying in her bed watching television when an inspector entered her room on the morning of August 19. The windowsill beside her was coated in dust, dead spiders, and ants. She told the inspector that ants are in her room all the time and that they crawl on the walls and the window.
Thirteen minutes later, inspectors were in the room of a second resident, a man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure, diabetes, anxiety, and depression. He was sitting in a wheelchair. His windowsills were also covered in dust and dead insects. He told inspectors the ants are in his room all the time, that they crawl all over the wall by the window, and that he takes his meals in his room. Ants, he said, had gotten into his food.
Both residents are documented as cognitively intact.
The next morning, two certified nursing assistants confirmed what the residents had described. One of them said she had seen ants on residents themselves, and noted that it was bad for residents who couldn't brush them off.
That same day, the facility's administrator told inspectors she was aware there had been a problem with ants. She said she was planning to call the exterminator the facility has a contract with.
Planning to call. Not had called. Not that an exterminator had been out and the problem was being addressed. The administrator, aware of the infestation, had not yet picked up the phone.
The violation was cited under the federal standard requiring nursing homes to maintain a pest control program sufficient to prevent and address infestations of mice, insects, and other pests. Inspectors classified the harm level as minimal, or potential for actual harm, and noted that few residents were affected.
But few is not none. A man eating meals alone in his room, unable to keep ants out of his food, is not a minor inconvenience to record and move on from. Neither is a woman lying in bed watching television while ants move across the wall beside her. These are people with serious medical conditions spending their days in rooms the facility had not bothered to treat, in a building where the staff had noticed ants crawling on residents who could not brush them off.
The facility had a pest control contract. It simply had not used it.
Arcadia Care Bloomington houses 92 residents. The inspection reviewed pest control conditions for three of them and found problems in two of the rooms examined. The man eating ants with his meals had no way to take those meals somewhere else.
