Federal inspectors found the fuzzy grey substance coating filters in six rooms during a January 27-28 complaint investigation. The buildup was so heavy it made filters opaque in multiple units.

In room D-16, inspectors discovered both filters covered with grey fuzz approximately one-eighth inch thick. Similar conditions existed in rooms D-12 and D-15, where the substance completely obscured the filters.
The contamination extended throughout the facility. Room E-52's filters were opaque with buildup. Room E-41 showed the same grey coating on both filters.
When inspectors returned the next day, the dirty filters remained unchanged. Rooms D-16, D-12, D-15, and E-41 still had the opaque grey substance covering their air conditioning units.
The maintenance director confirmed the scope during a facility walkthrough on January 28. All air conditioning units throughout the building required cleaning, including those on B, C, E, A, and D halls.
The contaminated filters posed particular risks to residents with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and related lung conditions. Dirty air conditioning systems can cause respiratory irritation and worsen existing breathing problems in vulnerable patients.
Federal inspectors cited the facility for failing to maintain a safe, functional environment. The violation affected multiple residents across five halls sampled during the investigation.
The inspection found no evidence that staff had cleaned or replaced the heavily soiled filters despite their obvious condition. The grey buildup appeared to have accumulated over an extended period, suggesting routine maintenance had been neglected facility-wide.
