The January 30 inspection revealed rust coating the outside and inside of pantry cabinets. Brown stains covered the countertop. Red and brown stains marked the inside of both the refrigerator and freezer where food was kept.

Inspectors documented additional unsanitary conditions throughout the pantry. A coffee carafe sat with dried coffee caked at the bottom. Water stains covered an ice bucket and ice scoop left on the counter.
The coffee machine showed rust. The ice machine displayed both rust and calcium buildup. Sink fixtures and the inside of the sink were coated with calcium deposits.
When inspectors presented their findings to nursing home administrator and the director of nursing at 2:20 p.m. that afternoon, the administrator acknowledged the problems. She said both dietary staff and housekeeping staff were responsible for cleaning the pantry.
The administrator promised to investigate the matter.
Federal regulations require nursing homes to store food in clean, sanitary environments that meet professional standards. The facility failed to meet those requirements in the eighth-floor pantry, inspectors determined.
The violations affected few residents and posed minimal harm or potential for actual harm, according to the inspection report. Inspectors observed three floors during their visit but found food storage problems only on the eighth floor.
The inspection was conducted in response to a complaint about the facility.
